Sunflower Oil Flow Meter Viscosity Scaling and Calibration

Quick Answer: Sunflower oil viscosity drops sharply with temperature—from about 60 cP at 20°C to under 10 cP at 60°C. Any flow meter reading without temperature correction will drift 2–6% for every 10°C shift in process temperature. We scale and calibrate oval gear meters with an integrated PT100 and a 4–20 mA HART transmitter so the output automatically compensates for actual oil viscosity, giving you mass or volume flow accurate to ±0.2% of rate across your full operating range.

Most engineers skip the viscosity check when they first order a sunflower oil meter. They know the oil type and the pipe size, maybe DN25 or DN40, and they assume a factory calibration in light oil will be good enough. In practice we have seen a lot of these meters drift badly when the line starts cold in the morning and then runs hot after a few hours. Here is the thing. Sunflower oil at 20°C has a viscosity around 60 cP. At 40°C it is closer to 25 cP. At 60°C it falls to about 8 cP. That is a 7× span in viscosity just from normal process heating. A positive displacement meter like an oval gear meter will slip more at low viscosity. Without scaling, the meter under-reports flow by 3–5% at high temperature compared to cold start. That is lost money in a bulk loading operation, a batch blending system, or a continuous frying line.

Why Sunflower Oil Viscosity Is the Key Parameter

We have tested this on a calibration rig with a DN20 oval gear meter at our partner lab in Malaysia. With sunflower oil at 22°C the K-factor was 356.2 pulses per litre. Same meter, same oil batch at 55°C gave 349.5 pulses per litre. The difference is 1.9% just from viscosity effect. In a tanker loading 30,000 L per day, that is 570 L unaccounted. Nobody wants that conversation with the accountant. The reason is simple. Oval gear meters depend on a thin film of liquid sealing the clearance between the gears and the chamber wall. When viscosity drops, more fluid slips past the gears without being counted. Temperature alone is not the full story. Different sunflower oil grades—high-oleic, mid-oleic, linoleic—have slightly different viscosity-temperature curves. Refined, bleached, and deodorised oil behaves differently from crude pressed oil that still has some phospholipids. We capture this by measuring the actual temperature at the meter body with a fast-response PT100 inserted directly into the meter housing.

Meter Selection for Sunflower Oil: Oval Gear vs Coriolis

Many customers ask us whether a Coriolis mass flow meter is better for sunflower oil. It can be, especially for custody transfer or high-value blending, but it costs 3 to 5 times more than a well-set-up oval gear meter. For a typical SME food oil operation in Vietnam, Thailand, or Kenya, a Silver Automation Instruments oval gear meter with built-in temperature sensor and a smart transmitter is the practical choice. We recommend our OG-AL series with aluminium housing for DN15 to DN40 lines, or the OG-SS stainless steel version for edible oil contact. The meter body is factory-calibrated with a standard oil of 40 cP at 30°C. That calibration alone is not enough for sunflower oil because the customer rarely runs exactly at 40 cP. So we add a viscosity scaling function inside the transmitter. The processor takes the raw pulse count, reads the PT100 temperature, and applies a 10-point viscosity linearisation curve derived from actual sunflower oil data. The output over 4–20 mA HART then represents true volume flow compensated to a reference temperature of 20°C, or compensated mass flow if we enter the density at 20°C, typically 0.919 kg/L for sunflower oil. If the plant control system prefers pulse output, we scale the pulses in real time based on the temperature correction factor. No external PLC math needed.

Calibration Procedure We Use at Silver Instruments

Every sunflower oil meter we ship goes through a two-stage calibration. Stage one is a standard volumetric calibration with a master meter in a light oil loop at 25, 50, 75, and 100% of the meter’s full range. This establishes the base K-factor curve. Stage two is the temperature and viscosity scaling. We fill a small heated test loop with the specific sunflower oil grade the customer will use, or with a reference sunflower oil supplied by the customer. We log flow pulses and PT100 readings at four temperature points covering the expected operating range, usually 20°C, 35°C, 50°C, and 65°C. From these we generate a correction polynomial that the transmitter uses for interpolation. We then run a full batch test simulating a st

art-up from ambient to hot running condition and verify the totalised volume error stays below 0.2%. The customer receives a calibration certificate listing the viscosity and temperature points, the polynomial coefficients, and the as-tested error. We also provide a simple setup sheet so the field engineer can enter the final parameters via the local display or HART handheld.

We have seen cases where a customer in Nigeria received a meter calibrated in Europe for light oil, installed it on a sunflower oil filling line, and saw 3% errors on day one. The supplier did not offer viscosity scaling. They just told the customer to apply a manual correction factor. Manual correction only works if the process temperature never changes. In a typical edible oil plant, the tank temperature goes up and down between batches, the pipe warms up after product changeover, and the ambient temperature in a tropical warehouse can shift from 24°C at night to 38°C in the afternoon. A manual factor cannot track that. Our approach with automatic viscosity scaling eliminates that drift. The only extra hardware is the PT100 sensor and the transmitter, which adds about 15% to the meter cost compared to a bare pulse meter. Most plant managers find that pays back in the first few months just in reduced product give-away.

Real-World Performance on Sunflower Oil

Last year we supplied a set of DN25 oval gear meters with viscosity scaling to a sunflower oil bottling plant in Surabaya, Indonesia. They fill 1 L and 5 L bottles at a rate of 90 bottles per minute on two lines. The process temperature varied between 28°C in the morning and 45°C by noon because the oil was preheated for easier pumping. Before scaling, they were seeing bottle overfill of up to 9 mL per litre in the afternoon runs. That meant they gave away almost one extra bottle for every 110 filled. After we installed the compensated meters, the overfill dropped to below 2 mL per litre, which is within their filling machine’s own tolerance. The quality manager told us the payback was less than four months just on oil cost. So when you send us an inquiry, we ask for the low- est and highest process temperature you expect, the sunflower oil type, your pipe size (DN), flow range in L/h or kg/h, and your preferred output signal. Send us those details and we will recommend a calibrated meter package with a specific scaling curve for your conditions. That includes a P&ID sketch and a wiring diagram for the transmitter connection to your PLC or flow computer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a special flow meter for sunflower oil or can I use a standard oval gear meter? A standard oval gear meter works but without temperature compensation the accuracy will vary with oil temperature. We strongly recommend a version with integrated PT100 and viscosity scaling to keep errors below ±0.2% across your temperature range.

Can you calibrate the meter using my own sunflower oil sample? Yes. We can calibrate with a customer-supplied oil sample at our facility in Singapore or we can provide a field calibration kit if you have a master meter on site. The calibration polynomial will then match your exact oil grade.

What output signals do I get from the compensated meter? The standard transmitter delivers a 4–20 mA HART signal that carries the compensated flow rate. You can also configure a frequency output that is scaled in real time based on temperature correction. A local LCD display shows both totalised volume and actual oil temperature.

What is the maximum viscosity range your scaling can handle? Our standard 10-point linearisation handles viscosity from 5 cP to 200 cP, which covers sunflower oil easily. For wider spans like crude oil heating processes we offer a 20-point custom curve. The meter hardware itself can measure oil up to 1,000 cP depending on the model.

How do I verify the compensation is working after installation? Run the line at a steady flow rate, note the process temperature and the meter reading, then heat or cool the oil by 15°C or more and repeat the test. The compensated reading should stay within 0.2% of the known master meter or weigh scale. If not, we can check the parameters remotely through the HART link.

Tell us your minimum and maximum oil temperature, pipe size, and flow range. We will specify the oval gear meter with the right temperature sensor and build the viscosity scaling curve before shipment.
