Description:

Flow Meter Turbines: High-Speed Volumetric Measurement for Low-Viscosity Liquids

Quick Answer

Turbine flow meters deliver reliable volumetric measurement for low-viscosity liquids like diesel, gasoline, water, solvents, and light chemicals. Flow meter turbines are also called axial turbine flow meters in some catalogs. Silver Automation Instruments supplies turbine flow meters in sizes from DN4 to DN300 with accuracy up to 0.5 percent of reading. Send us your pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size in DN, and flow range for a turbine meter quote.

How a Turbine Flow Meter Works in Low-Viscosity Service

A turbine flow meter has a rotor mounted in line with the fluid flow. The rotor spins at a speed proportional to flow velocity. A pickoff sensor detects each rotor blade and generates a pulse train. The K-factor is the number of pulses per litre. Typical K-factors range from 500 pulses per litre on a DN40 meter to 15,000 pulses per litre on a DN10 meter.

Low-viscosity liquids accelerate the rotor quickly. Diesel at 40 °C has a viscosity around 2.5 cP. Gasoline at 20 °C is below 1 cP. Water is near 1 cP. These thin fluids produce a stable pulse output even at high flow speed.

Silver Automation Instruments builds turbine meters with 316L stainless steel bodies, tungsten carbide shafts, and ceramic bearings. This combination handles rotor speeds above 12,000 rpm in some small line sizes. The pickoff can be a magnetic or modulated carrier type. Both work with totalizers, flow computers, and PLC inputs.

Key Specifications for Sizing

Sizing starts with flow range, pipe size, viscosity, and pressure drop. A standard turbine flow meter from Silver Automation Instruments covers flow velocity from 0.5 m/s to 10 m/s. Some high-speed designs reach 15 m/s. Accuracy is 0.5 percent of reading on liquids with viscosity between 0.5 cP and 5 cP. For viscosity up to 10 cP, accuracy may drop to 1.0 percent of reading depending on flow range.

Process connections include BSP, NPT, ANSI 150 flanges, and ANSI 300 flanges. Standard temperature rating is -20 °C to 120 °C. High-temperature versions go to 150 °C. Standard pressure rating is PN16 to PN100. Some models handle PN420 for hydraulic test stands.

Outputs include pulse, 4-20 mA HART, and Modbus RTU. Ex versions with ATEX Zone 1 or IECEx are available for fuel loading racks and solvent handling. A PT100 sensor can be added when temperature compensation is needed.

Low Viscosity Changes Rotor Behavior

Here is the thing. Thin liquids provide less lubrication than heavy oils. Bearing selection matters. But ceramic bearings hold up better in solvents and water. Tungsten carbide shafts resist wear in fuels. For liquids below 1 cP, a precision rotor and a high-frequency pickoff reduce low-flow pulsation.

Most engineers skip the viscosity correction charts for liquids under 5 cP. The turbine flow meter reads volume directly. For liquids from 10 cP to 50 cP, a positive displacement meter such as an oval gear flow meter is often a better fit.

We have seen this on customer sites many times. A paint manufacturer in Vietnam installed DN15 turbine flow meters on solvent lines. The solvents were near 0.8 cP at 25 °C. The turbine meters held repeatability at 0.1 percent for batch additions.

Industry Examples

A fuel distributor in the Philippines uses DN40 turbine flow meters on diesel bowsers. Each meter sends pulse output to a batch controller. The flow range is 2 to 20 cubic meters per hour. The fuel temperature stays around 30 °C to 35 °C.

A desalination plant in Oman measures RO permeate with DN80 turbine flow meters. The water viscosity is near 1 cP. The 4-20 mA HART output goes to a PLC for total daily production reporting. Permeate conductivity is around 200 µS/cm.

In Malaysia a chemical blending site measures light solvents with DN25 turbine flow meters. The site uses Ex versions because the area is Zone 1. The main output is pulse from a magnetic pickoff. The same signal drives a local totalizer and a remote flow computer.

Installation Notes

Use a straight run of 10 pipe diameters upstream and 5 pipe diameters downstream. Install a strainer upstream to protect the rotor from weld slag and particles. Do not use turbine meters on dirty or two-phase flow. Gas bubbles cause rotor overspeed and false totals.

Mount the meter in a drained line position if the liquid can solidify. For fuel systems, a deaeration valve helps remove free air. In temperate and tropical sites, cable glands should be sealed against moisture to extend pickoff life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a turbine flow meter measure water?

Yes. Water has low viscosity near 1 cP. A turbine meter works well for clean water, RO permeate, and demineralized water. Use a strainer upstream.

What is the best flow meter for diesel?

A turbine flow meter is a common choice for diesel because of its fast response and simple pulse output. For custody transfer, a positive displacement meter may be required by local regulations.

What viscosity is too high for a turbine flow meter?

Above 10 cP the rotor response becomes slow and the K-factor shifts. In that range an oval gear meter or a Coriolis mass flow meter gives better performance.

Does Silver Automation Instruments supply ATEX turbine meters?

Yes. We supply Ex versions with ATEX Zone 1 or IECEx for fuels and solvents. Share the gas group and zone classification with us.

What is the price of a turbine flow meter?

Price depends on line size, body material, pressure rating, and output. Send us your flow range, pipe size in DN, pressure in bar, and temperature in °C to get a quote.
