1. Information on the storage and transportation of light hydrocarbons in natural gas
Natural gas is a gaseous fossil fuel mainly composed of methane. It mainly exists in oil fields and natural gas fields, with a small amount also found in coal seams. When non fossil organic matter undergoes anaerobic decay, it produces methane rich gas, which is called biogas. The sources of biogas include swamps between forests and grasslands, landfills, sludge in sewers, and manure, which are produced by anaerobic decomposition of bacteria. Biogas also includes gastrointestinal distension (such as farts), which most commonly comes from livestock such as cows and sheep. When methane escapes into the atmosphere, it will be a greenhouse gas that directly contributes to the worsening of global warming. This scattered methane will be regarded as a pollutant rather than a useful energy source. However, once methane in the atmosphere oxidizes with ozone, it becomes carbon dioxide and water, so the greenhouse effect caused by methane emissions is relatively short-lived. And in terms of combustion, natural gas produces much less carbon dioxide than coal and other Carboniferous fuels. The important biological sources of methane are termites, ruminants (such as cows and sheep), and human cultivation of land. It is estimated that the annual emissions of these three are 1
5, 75, and 100 million tons respectively (the total annual emissions are about 100 million tons).
